Make sure you get celerity or leap as one of the first upgrades. They help you close in that gap fast so you can move in for the kill. But skulks really do suck, aliens have the advantage in the end game, with the upgrades and the lifeforms. Marines have the early advantage with the long range stuff against those weak little skulks.

the guy who tutored me (on the first server I joined) advised me to get celerity and carapace. I find redemption is a very good skill along with scent of fear. It's nice to know where they are behind the walls.

Well, the pros get leap first because they know how to use it. But I normally do cel first, carapace is nice so you don't die in one hit to shotguns and it helps you live a bit longer. But I find redemption nub and only get it if I onos. (on ns_ maps I get regen or cara though) SoF is nice, but it's one of the last upgrades I get unless I'm going to xeno.

exams week starting june 6th, but after that i'd have to go to that horrible place called school for another 2 years untill i graduate :/:(
