IRC - usually slow as hell
FTP - I can't ever find any FTP's for anything useful..

used to use irc alot when i still had a 1 or 2 mbit line, now i practically only use newsgroups. it takes 3 to 4 hours to download a full dvd with my 3.3 mbit line.
you have to be with really good boards (and share alot with them) to get nice ftp links, never really bothered trying it.
