That's just to earn an MD and be a general practice physician but if you want to become anything specialized then you're looking at several more years.
One of my cousins is married to a nuerosurgeon-in-training and he had to do 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of med school, and a few years of residency. He's currently an MD but a few years into another 6-8 years of training/residency specializing in neurology/neurosurgery.
Which is one of the four main reasons they're paid a lot.
1) They have to pay off all of the training they had.
2) They work harder than most other professions, and have little to no life out of office.
3) They're responsible for people's lives...can't skimp on pay.:P
4) Who'd want to go through all of that schooling to make $30k/year?:P
