It has to be the egg.
Egg hatched into the chicken.
The being that came before was similar to the chicken genetically but not really a chicken, then thanks to genetic variation it mutated into what we now know as a chicken!

but what if the "chicken" came first and the "egg" was a mutation brought on by thousands of years of evolution because it brought about a higher rate of survival?
All it really comes down to is what makes it easier for the organism to survive and reproduce...who knows if the first chicken cracked out of an egg or the egg was a result of a genetic mutation that matured for countless years until it has become what it is today...who knows?
