one of my classmates plays the backstreetboys thingy. fyi: he started playing guitar about a year ago...
must admit it doesn't sound as good/ is not as fast, but he comes close

On the contrary, not only do you have to have an intimate knowledge of the scale(s) you play in, but you have to play them at lightning speeds!
To say shredding (playing fast) requires no skill isn't very correct; it requires MORE skill, IMHO.
